Therapy mystifies many people, but my approach is filled with compassion and intention.
— Amy Miller

Approach to Therapy:

The most essential element in therapy is developing trust between the client and therapist. So naturally, creating trust with a client is my first priority in session. I genuinely enjoy getting to know my clients and understanding how they experience the world. Once a secure relationship is established, I will help you identify your struggles and strengths. When feeling anxious or depressed, we tend to view life distortedly. I can help you see things more clearly to find peace, joy, and happiness, even amidst the ups and downs of life.

Therapy mystifies many people, but my approach is filled with compassion and intention. Together, we will figure out why you’re feeling like you are. From there, I will help you get out of your thoughts and into your present experience. Our journey together will give you practical tools to manage emotional overwhelm and calm your nervous system. The goal of this process is for you to feel safe practicing vulnerability, setting boundaries, identifying life goals, and practicing self-compassion. And my commitment is to be by your side through the entire process, affirming, encouraging, and gently challenging you.

I primarily utilize mindfulness practices and positive psychology. If clients are interested in specific modalities like CBT or DBT, I am also well-versed in those.

Clinical Interests:

I have experience working with a wide range of issues, including grief, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and life transitions. I also enjoy working with men and anyone new to the experience of talking about their feelings, perhaps for the first time in their life!

I enjoy working with couples who are navigating conflict resolution, hoping to improve communication skills, or just in need a relationship tune-up.

Whether in the context of individual or couples therapy, I am especially interested in supporting people as they explore their sexual orientation or gender identity. I also work with people who’s family members or loved ones are exploring their gender identity or sexual orientation, offering a safe place for people to feel supported.

Education and Training:

I am a pre-licensed professional counselor in the state of Illinois.

I have a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from Northeastern Illinois University. I have a BA from Western Michigan University in Sociology and Women’s Studies with a minor in Psychology. I have completed training in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) through the Medical University of South Carolina.

3 Things I love:

Nature, dogs, and pop culture.
